NORMAL RECOVERY SYMPTOMS EXPERIENCED BY THE RECOVERING INDIVIDUAL
Recovery from alcoholism and other drug addiction is a life-long process of adaptation and growth that involves the emergence of a new and positive lifestyle. This growth is beautiful but not without some pain.
Recovery involves a number of social, psychological and physical changes or symptoms, some of which are pleasant, while others may be disturbing to the individual, loved ones and friends. Being familiar with the symptoms can reduce or eliminate the anxiety associated with them.
The symptoms may be experienced well into recovery, that is, for several months and even up to two years following the onset of sobriety. A minimum of a year is usually required for the physiology of the body to return to normal. At least two years are required for the emotional or psychological modalities to return to a normal state, assuming that an on-going growth and recovery program is utilized.
There is probably no way to accelerate recovery of the body and thereby relieve the symptoms earlier; tincture of time is the most important ingredient to relief. The symptoms are most likely a product of the body's slow return to a normal physiologic state but they may also be encountered in important disease states that may or may not be related to alcoholism or other durg addiction.
Repsect for the symptoms is indicated and competent health evaluation is needed to diagnose and, when indicted, initiate adequate treatment for coexisting diseases.
